LOOKING FOR EDUCATION OR TRAINING? HERE’S A GREAT SOURCE

(Article published in HWW June 2005)

In NYC, the Human Resources Administration, which runs the welfare system locally, publishes a list of "APPROVED TRAINING PROGRAMS" on the city web site. It’s easy to find and easy to find your way around. The address is https://a069-webapps1.nyc.gov/atp/search.cfm. Or you can find it through the city’s web site. Here’s how, step by step.

  1. 1.Sit down at a computer (if you don’t have one handy, go to your local library) and punch in www.nyc.gov.

  2. 2.Select "city agencies."

  3. 3.Select "Human Resources-HRA."

  4. 4.Select "Services."

  5. 5.Scroll down past the list of Job Centers and click on to "Approved Training Programs."

  6. 6.Now you can search for information by the name of the Provider, the type of program, the borough it’s in, or the zip code. Listings give you addresses and phone numbers, names of directors, whether the program charges tuition or fees.

Give it a try. Do you want to take classes in Brooklyn to be a child care worker. Do you want training to be a "nursing aide" or "office clerk" or "carpenter" or "paralegal." Click on and see what you find.
